250-strong Crowd Assembles to Welcome New Chamber

The South Wales Chamber of Commerce was formally launched at a special event held at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay last night (Monday). First Minister for Wales, the Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan and David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce expressed confidence in the South Wales Chamber of Commerce and highlighted its importance in driving the local economy forward.

The event brought together over 250 Chamber members, local politicians and key stakeholders in what was a high-spirited welcome for the new South Wales Chamber of Commerce.

Guest speaker at the launch, First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: ”I am pleased that a new Chamber has been formed and I look forward to it playing a full and important role in taking the economy of Wales forward.   During these challenging trading conditions, it is important that businesses across South Wales are able to benefit from the support and services that the new Chamber will provide.”

David Frost, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:” During these tough economic times confidence is key to success, and as such the launch of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce could not have come at a better time.

“The new Chamber covers a very important area and, being accredited to the British Chambers of Commerce, presents valuable opportunities for local businesses as it is able to connect them to national and international markets.

“The South Wales Chamber of Commerce will provide support to businesses of every size and in every sector, highlighting the issues they face and ensuring that their successes are celebrated.

“Never before has the role of business been more important. It is business that will drive the economy out of recession and the South Wales Chamber of Commerce is well placed to help local companies make the best of the current situation and prepare for the upturn.”

David Russ, managing director of the South Wales Chamber of Commerce, added: “The support we have received from our members and partners in the run up to, and since, becoming the South Wales Chamber of Commerce has been phenomenal.

“The strength of South Wales will have a major impact on the Welsh economy moving forward and we acknowledge that we have a major part to play in helping viable businesses survive and prosper.

“These are trying times for business, and the services provided by a Chamber of Commerce are particularly important in helping local companies fight back against the recession.”
